TENDER COMPASS POCKET SHIRT BEEKEEPER'S CHECK COTTON CALICO - TURMERIC DYED
An overshirt is one of our favourite things here at PPHH so to add William's creations to our roster is really a big deal. They won't feel or look like anything else you have in your wardrobe, firstly down to the unique shapes but also down to the rarer fabrics and dyes he utilises.
This mid-weight ecru cotton calico has a textural check made up of cells of Tender’s Beekeeper’s Cloth. To do this, a special gear had to be constructed to change the tension on the yarn ends that make up the warp stripes of the check.
A gear (or reed) is a bit like a giant comb which sits above the weft tape in the loom and tensions the warp yarn as it comes into weaving. The yarn tension is similarly varied in the weft picks, forming raised cells in a windowpane check which show up particularly dramatically where they take on the natural turmeric dye.
Shape-wise it has symmetrical semicircular front and back tails, with large concentric curved pockets (drawn with a compass) all the way around each front tail.
The sleeves open into faced false cuffs, and the back is seamed up to the collar. The front plackets are folded outwards to accommodate the pocket edges, showing the back of the fabric.
Made in England
Tender has its roots in antique workwear and machinery, especially from the Great British Steam Age. On a steam train, the tender was the truck which carried the coal and water to power the locomotive, and was coupled in between the engine and the carriages. They were built incredibly solidly, mostly from riveted cast iron, and had to hold enough fuel to take a train weighing many tons all over Britain.
Polymath William Kroll is from the UK where he hones his various crafts and designs his British-made clothes and accessories. They are manufactured in small factories, ateliers, and homes around the country, exploring new approaches to traditional weaving, making, tanning, and dyeing.
His pieces are truly unique, possessing a rough, everlasting charm that only increases with age and use.
