TENDER ENGINE SGRAFFITO MUG RED CLAY - BLUE GLAZE
Many of William from Tender's projects and inspirations seem to stem from a bygone era of British industrialisation, a time that gave birth to so many new things, before they were enhanced or perfected; imbued with a functionality, charm and beauty that only newness borne from functionality can. This mug is almost a testament to that era, or rather where that world collided with techniques of yore.
Tender’s sgraffito coffee mugs are hand thrown in England from natural red clay dug in England. They are slipped with natural white clay, and left unslipped and unglazed on the base, to reveal the original character of the material. The white slip is hand engraved and glazed with coloured salts.
Sgraffito mugs are hand-incised before being glazed, picking out the scratches through the slip to the darker red clay as black. This ancient technique was used by the Romans to create frescos. Each piece is engraved entirely by hand, using just a pointed wooden stylus, so is slightly different from the next.
Made in England
Tender has its roots in antique workwear and machinery, especially from the Great British Steam Age. On a steam train, the tender was the truck which carried the coal and water to power the locomotive, and was coupled in between the engine and the carriages. They were built incredibly solidly, mostly from riveted cast iron, and had to hold enough fuel to take a train weighing many tons all over Britain.
Polymath William Kroll is from the UK where he hones his various crafts and designs his British-made clothes and accessories. They are manufactured in small factories, ateliers, and homes around the country, exploring new approaches to traditional weaving, making, tanning, and dyeing.
His pieces are truly unique, possessing a rough, everlasting charm that only increases with age and use.
