Betty Higgins was a unique brand that specialised in jackets made from brocade fabric woven with colourful threads to create luxurious patterns, and women's dresses made from Japanese-printed kimono fabrics. After the war, it started as a bespoke dress shop and had a shop in the historic Royal Hawaiian Hotel, affectionately known as the Pink Palace, and had many customers on the American mainland. Because the production of men's shirts was small, there are not many vintage pieces from the brand that exist today, but most of those that have been confirmed are Oriental designs. This piece also depicts the Sankin-kōtai system, a system imposed by the Edo Shogunate on feudal lords. It is an extremely rare design that meticulously depicts the procession of feudal lords moving in formation to Edo. Influenced by the Oriental boom that began in Hawaii and spread to the American mainland, many designs featuring the good old days of Japan were created at the time.
