The popularity of high-quality and durable Sensuji (thousand stripes) never waned, and various kinds of striped fabrics that were in circulation in Japan at the time were exported to Hawaii. These fabrics, reminiscent of kasuri, became as popular in Hawaii at the time as palaka, and were a source of emotional support for Japanese immigrants longing for their distant homeland. They were popular not only as workwear but also as street wear, and short-sleeved types were also produced.

The first Japanese immigrants crossed the ocean in 1868 (the first year of the Meiji era) and headed for Hawaii. That is when the history of Hawaiian workwear, which can be said to be the origin of the aloha shirt, began. At that time, Japanese clothing was mainstream in Japan, so people who moved to Hawaii were forced to have their work clothes made locally. When Japanese-born Yasuda Kayoji founded Union Supply in 1922, he succeeded in providing high-quality workwear and expanded his business. Although the company was a clothing manufacturer, it also played the role of a distributor importing fabrics and other products from Japan.

The shirt is an open collared one, boxy, with twin chest pockets and bamboo buttons.
